Descriptive Essay

The Diwali, also known as "the light's festival" is celebrated by different religious groups in India like Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism, one time per year. It's the opening of the Hindu New Year, and for the most happiness and glorious nights of the year, furthermore is in honor to Lakshmí, a divinity who provides prosperity and richness, the festival takes place on the fifteenth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Karttika, this could be between 21th October and 18th November and can last four or five days, is a time for families to gather and share several meals, decorating the houses specially and distributed gifts among themselves.

This gorgeous event commemorates some important acts that occurred in a past, those acts were: Narakasura demon’s die the release of the sixteen thousand maidens who were prisoners and the return to the Ayodhya city of the prince Rama after his victory over Ravana, who was demon king. Therefore, and as the name suggests the celebration focuses on light candles (called diyas). This festival starts with entire cities lit by thousands of candles, lights and lamps. Also the streets are decorated with garlands made of flowers for women.

As you already know, Diwali lasts five days. Each day receive a name given that Hindu calendar. The first day is named “Vasu Baras”, this is a day where people adore cows and calves. Second day “Dah Teras”, where is celebrated God Dahvantry’s born. Third day “Chaturdashi” is considered as the day when light beats the darkness. Fourth day “Lakshmi Puja” is the most important day of Diwali, people pray a Lakshmi and fifth day “Govardhan Puja” is the day where Krishna beat Indra.

Moreover, to celebrate this event, people clean their houses and decorated it with special various reasons and oil lamps or candles that are lit at sunset. It is usual to hold a meal of savory and sweet dishes; giving gifts to people nearby and family, there are also commonly fireworks and games. During these days you will see people branding new clothes which were bought for this special occasion and having time with their families and their friends too. On Diwali, there are many fireworks spectacles and there are lights everywhere.

To sum up, The Diwali is a five day festival focused on the joy of sharing with family and the community around lights, delicious food, street fairs, parties, fireworks and prayer and music. Furthermore for Hindus lighter the Diyas, indicates a personal victory of good over evil and the return of faith.
